How to check if my pool fence is compliant with Queensland state law

1 – Legal Pool Fence Heights & Gaps

Pool Compliant Fences – Summary of Video 1

  • The most common issue with any pool fence is the height. A compliant pool fence must be at least 1200mm high.
  • You should also check the gap at the bottom of the fence – the maximum allowed gap at the bottom of a fence is 100mm
  • Also check for ‘stepping points’ that may lower the effective height of the fence

2 – Pool Fence Gates & Latches

Pool Compliant Fences – Summary of Video 2

  • Child drownings occur because of faulty gates, or gates that can be propped open
  • Pool gates must open out (away from pool) and be self-closing
  • The top of the pool gate latch must be 1500mm above the ground
  • Pool gate hinges can be considered a ‘stepping point’, lowering the effective legal height of the pool fence
  • The gap between the uprights of a pool fence can be no more than 100mm
  • Also check for ‘stepping points’ inside the pool fence such as pool furniture and pot plants
  • Any object within 300mm of the fence (inside or out) may be considered as a stepping point

3 – Fixed and Compliant Pool Fence

Pool Compliant Fences – Summary of Video 3

  • Entrances to pools should feature self-closing gates with the latch a least 1500mm high
  • ‘Cones’ fitted to gate hinges help prevent them becoming stepping points
  • Retaining walls and other landscaping features can easily become stepping points
  • Pool fences should be compliant with local laws, look good, and keep kids safe!

Extra Pool Fence Compliance Notes:

  • A proper CPR sign must be displayed inside the pool area to help facilitate the proper administration of CPR if an emergency may occur.
  • Once your pool fence has been certified compliant, you should periodically check to ensure that the pool remains compliant; Land levels can change over time.
